Coping With Separation Anxiety in Singapore Preschools: What Parents Can Do

A flurry of emotions surrounds the milestone of the first day of preschool. The heartbreaking scene of a child clinging to their leg at the school gate is a familiar one for many Singaporean parents. Even though it's quite normal for young children to experience anxiety when they are separated from their primary caregivers, overcoming this transition calls for a lot of patience and strategy.

At Bright Kids School House, we recognize that parents frequently find these "goodbyes" to be just as difficult as the children. We've created a guide to help you and your child confidently deal with separation anxiety based on our decades of experience in early childhood education.

Recognizing the "Why" Behind the Weeping

A close bond often manifests as anxiety about separation. Children frequently thrive on the routine of home life in Singapore's fast-paced environment. It is normal for them to feel uncertain when that routine changes to a new setting with unfamiliar people. Effective management begins with acknowledging that such anxiety is a developmental stage rather than a behavioural issue.

1. The Influence of the "Short and Sweet" Farewell

Staying too long or slipping away when the child isn't looking is one of the most frequent mistakes parents make. Sneaking out can harm a child's trust, making them even more needy the next day.

Rather, create a "Goodbye Ritual." This could be a double hug, a special high five, or a coded phrase you both say. Leave as soon as the ritual is completed. Once you are out of sight, our educators are prepared to intervene right away to divert your child's attention and engage them in an activity that will help them quickly settle in.

2. The Importance of Consistency

Predictability is comforting to children. Make an effort to maintain as regular a morning routine as you can. A consistent rhythm tells your child that "everything is okay" from the moment they wake up until you drive them to school. If you tell them you will pick them up after tea break, make sure you arrive on time. Creating this cycle of departure and return reinforces the idea that you will always return.

3. Discuss School at Home

Comfort comes from familiarity. When talking about preschool, use constructive language. Name the teachers and describe the enjoyable activities they can expect, such as messy art sessions or outdoor play. By helping them visualize what happens during the day, books about starting school can also help them feel a little more familiar with the unknown.

4. Have Faith in the Teachers and the Process

When your child cries, it's normal to feel awful, but keep in mind that most kids stop crying a few minutes after their parents leave. Our staff at Bright Kids closely monitors these changes. We believe that a child is prepared to learn when they feel safe. Your child will eventually emulate your calm demeanor if you trust our educators.

Why a Proper Environment Is Important

Your child's ability to overcome separation anxiety is greatly influenced by the surroundings they are placed in. We have been perfecting an environment where kids feel like they belong at Bright Kids School House for more than 30 years.

Our goal as an ECDA-appointed Partner Operator (POP) is to make excellent education welcoming and accessible. We aim to captivate kids with the excitement of learning as soon as they enter our facility through our “Four E’s" strategy—Explore, Experience, Empower, and Engage. The excitement of learning takes the place of the fear of separation when a child is occupied with investigating a novel idea or partaking in a sensory experience.

We nurture rather than merely instruct. Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Teo in 1995, our long history is based on the conviction that every child should have a future-ready start in a setting that feels like a second home.
